The Shocking Reason Behind EA's Decision to Remove Mirror's Edge from Stores
UPDATE 4:00PM EST 21 March 2023
If you're a fan of Mirror's Edge, you might want to grab a copy of the
game before it's too late. EA has announced that it will be delisting
Mirror's Edge and several Battlefield games from digital storefronts on
April 28, 2023. The online services for these games will also shut down
on December 8, 2023.
Mirror's Edge is a first-person
action-adventure game that features parkour-style gameplay and an iconic
protagonist named Faith. The game was released in 2008 and received
critical acclaim for its innovative design and visuals. However, it did
not sell well enough to justify a sequel until 2016, when EA released
Mirror's Edge Catalyst, a reboot of the franchise.
The reason for delisting Mirror's Edge and the Battlefield games is unclear, but EA said that it wants to focus on its current and future Battlefield experiences. The Battlefield games that will be removed are Battlefield 1943, Battlefield: Bad Company, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2. These are older titles that were released between 2008 and 2010, and have been overshadowed by newer entries in the series.
The good news is that if you already own these games or buy them before they are delisted, you will still be able to play their offline features, such as single-player campaigns. The exception is Battlefield 1943, which is an online-only multiplayer game that will become unplayable after December 8. The bad news is that you will lose access to any online functionality, such as multiplayer modes, leaderboards, ghosts, and DLCs.
This is not the first time that EA has delisted or shut down servers for its older games. Last year, EA closed several servers for games like Command & Conquer and Onrush. It seems that digital games are not as permanent as we might think, and we should enjoy them while we can.
