Starfield will be locked to 30 FPS on Xbox. Todd Howard explains in new Interview
Starfield's maximum frame rate on Xbox will be 30 FPS, as explained by Todd Howard.
After the Starfield Direct event and Microsoft's 2023 Xbox Games Showcase, Todd Howard, Executive Producer at Bethesda, revealed in a recent interview that Starfield will be locked at 30 FPS on both the Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S.
While this news may disappoint fans expecting a higher frame rate, Howard stated that Bethesda made this decision to prioritize the game's visual quality.
"Considering our track record with previous games, it shouldn't come as a surprise what we aim for: vast, open worlds with dynamic environments and meticulous details," Howard explained. "That's what we want to achieve. It runs in 4K on the series X and 1440 on the series S. We lock it at 30 FPS because we want to maintain that fidelity and preserve all the elements. We don't want to compromise any aspect of it."
"Fortunately, in this case, the game is running exceptionally well. It often exceeds 30 FPS, sometimes reaching 60," he added, referring to the game's performance on PC. "But on consoles, we lock it to ensure consistency, allowing players to fully immerse themselves without thinking about frame rates."
Although Starfield will be locked at 30 FPS, Howard assured players that the game feels fantastic to play. He emphasized that Bethesda needs the headroom provided by this frame rate to prevent intense gameplay moments from causing inconsistent frame rates.
"We never want to sacrifice the experience that makes our games truly special. It feels incredible, even during intense battles. We're delighted with how it feels. And we require that extra capacity because in our games, anything can happen."
